VistaGlazz: Usage guide

In this short and simple guide, i’ll show you how to patch your system using VistaGlazzVistaGlazz and how to make Vista a bit more transparent. If you feel uncomfortable with these kind of patching utilities, you can always create a system restore point. VistaGlazz will never delete your original files. Instead it will make a copy of the original file, patch the copy and rename the orginal to a backup extension.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version

It’s always wise to get the latest version of VistaGlazz from CodeGazer.com or Download.com. Both are trusted sources and are guaranteed spyware and virus free.

Step 2: Disclaimer

As I’ve pointed out earlier VistaGlazz is a patching program. We’ve tested the application thoroughly, nothing happens without your permission. Please read the disclaimer before you continue, and only accept it if you fully understand it.

VistaGlazz - Main

Step 3: Patch your system files

Windows Vista has a few security mechanisms that check the source of a visual style. When a visual style is not created (signed) by Microsoft it will not load the visual style, but instead jump back to Windows Classic look. The system patch modifies three DLLs to bypass this mechanism, and allows you to load whatever visual style you like.

VistaGlazz system buttonClick on the patch system button.
The patch system files screen will open.

The small shield is gray, which means not patched yet.

In the patch system files screen click on the Patch originals button. VistaGlazz will patch your system files. When VistaGlazz is done, it will ask you to restart your system.

VistaGlazz system patchedAfter restarting the system, run VistaGlazz again.
You’ll notice that the small shield has turned to green.

If the shield is not green, please retry the previous steps.

Congratulations your system files are patched! You can start using custom visual styles.

If you wish to return to unpatched state, you can click the patch system button again. It will provide you with the option to unpatch your system files.

Optional step 4: Patch your Windows Aero style

Since the release of Windows Vista a lot of users were annoyed by the lack of transparency in maximized windows. VistaGlazz can patch your Windows Aero style to keep your windows and taskbar transparent when you maximize a window. This step is not required for custom visual styles. VistaGlazz will create a full copy of your Windows Aero style, so nothings permanent.

VistaGlazz style patchClick on the patch style button.
The patch style screen will open.

The small shield is gray, which means not patched yet.

In the patch style screen click on the Patch style button. VistaGlazz will patch your Aero style and restart the Windows Desktop Manager (WDM). Your screen will flicker and for a moment lose it’s transparency.

VistaGlazz style patchedYou’ll return to the main menu.
You’ll notice that the small shield has turned to green.

If the shield is not green, please retry the previous steps.

Congratulations your Aero style has been patched! Start enjoying the transparency.

If you wish to return to unpatched state, you can click the patch style button again. It will provide you with the option to unpatch your style.

Final thought

If you encounter any problems or bugs in the patching process, feel free to post them on the forum.

Having problems with VG now that I have uninstalled SP1 RC1. System files patched fine, but when trying to patch the Aero msstyle for full glass effect, I get an error stating that the program could not access C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Aero\aero.msstyle.vgorg - access is denied. This happens every time I try to path the style.

VG *does* generate a UAC prompt for elevated privileges, and I allow it, so it should, theoretically, have the privileges to access the file - however, for some reason it is not able to patch it.

You might want to try an remove the aero.msstyle.vgorg file manually. That way VistaGlazz can generate a new backup and patch your msstyle.

You are sure that the aero.msstyle file is currently the unpatched Vista RTM version right?

    cant access to the application
it is stated that it cant be installed earlier than windows vista x86
    wat to do pls?

  6. 6 Yvo van Beek

The program is for Windows Vista 32bit/64bit versions supporting Windows Aero only.

Please check the System requirements page in the VistaGlazz section, if your system fits the requirements.

I did all the steps and got the green shield for both the reboot and the patch, but i don’t see any difference…have I done something wrong?

For support please open a topic at the forum. That’s easier :)
If all is patched well you should keep transparency when you windows are maximized. Be sure that your system is Aero capable and has Aero enabled (check the system requirements in the VistaGlazz section).

I’ve tried to patch the dll and style files with VistaGlazz using Vista SP1 RC1 — windows will not load correctly. Various host processes won’t start, the main toolbar and start button aren’t there, the desktop won’t load, and I have to Cntl+Alt+Del to get access to the computer files through running the task bar.

When I tried to patch the DLL files the shield went red. So I repeated the process, and it was still red. The Aero patched fine. Now I’m stuck in Windows Classic, and cannot even open Themes due to a rundll error, and can’t unpatch the DLL’s. I’m running Vista SP1.

If it’s possible when we install this application on our system can we use another publisher’ themes.if it is like that how can we manage it?
    Thank’s for your consideration

  12. 12 Yvo van Beek

It’s possible to install non Microsoft themes after the first patch step. We haven’t got a UI for it yet. You might want to have a look at DeskHack. It patches the style selection list.

Hey, can you help me out please?

I installed this a while ago, but all of a sudden today while I was on my computer everything just changed as if I didn’t install VistaGlazz… Went back and the shields were gray, I went to the first one and patched the files and restarted… then when I opened it after restart it was still grey; then went to the next one to see if it’d work, still didn’t work, instead it gave me that error that most people got, I went and deleted the file. Then when it worked it ruined my computer to windows classic, luckily I found some files to restore Aero back.

    Help?
    Thanks.

to fix the error that ur stuck in windows classic and can’t get into ur theme-manager, go to your dos-like command thingy, run that as administrator and type sfc/scnannow , reboot and voila, good as new

I installed vistaglazz and patched my system, now I cant even launch explorer.exe.

Everytime i start my computer and get to the login screen i get all these pop up error msgs saying “uxtheme.dll is not xxxx for the system please try to reinstall …..”

I tried to download the uxtheme.dll file from within windows but i everytime I extract it to windows\system32\ it says that access is denied.

and i cant even launch task manager to do anything. Starting it in safe mode won’t get explorer.exe to run as well because of the uxtheme.dll problem.

How cna I go about fixing this ?

  23. 23 Eddie

Had the same problem as Ourorborus and MArco.
So i searched my system and found a few vgorg files, these should be removed and VistaGlazz will work again (^_^ )

    ————–

these files should replace the original files or just simply delete/rename it…

    [C:\Windows\system32\]
    themeui.dll.vgorg
    uxtheme.dll.vgorg
    shsvcs.dll.vgorg

    [c:\windows\resources\themes\Aero]
    aero.msstyles.vgorg

    Hope this helps you to

On the system files screen it tells me that “One or more of the VistaGlazz essential system files are corrupt.” I was wondering if you might be able to help me fix this problem or possibly point me in a direction where I might find a solution because I’d really like to be able to use different visual styles. I have Vista Home Basic if that’s any help? Thanks.

    System files are corrupt
Your system files are corrupt. The style patch cannot continue.
As indicated by the red icon in the main menu your system files are corrupt.Fix these files first, before attempting style patch again.
