RunDll32 Update

So far we’ve only seen rundll32 problems after patching a VistaSP1 system with the original VistaGlazz, using the “patch anyway” option. It seems somewhat unlikely that anybody did in fact use the “patch anyway” option from the old VG on their SP1 system, but we want to be sure that this is not the cause of the rundll32 problems. You can expect a new beta release in the next few days that’ll address that specific point.

Update 2008/05/21:
We ran into some problems while creating a fix for the 64bit systems suffering from the problem described above. Yvo patched his 64bit Vista with VG 1.0 using the patch anyway option, so we could see firsthand what that would lead to. Apparently Vista didn’t like it. While Vista32 just throws some rundll32 errors, Vista64 will no longer boot in normal mode. A trip to safe mode and some file copying via the command prompt is what it took to restore things. We’ve not decided yet on what the best way is to help those of you running Vista64 and suffering from these kind of problems.

Long story short: It’s taking a little bit longer than expected. Though we will probably have a new version ready by Friday, we really want to perform some tests before uploading it to our site. Expect a new release somewhere Saturday.

In the meanwhile: If there is anyone with rundll32-problems that didn’t use the patch anyway of VG 1.0, please let us know exactly what steps you took that led to your problems. This way you will help us in identifying what went wrong and may lead to a fix for this problem.

    Hey Silence,

Sorry to hear about your problem. Could you please describe the steps you took that led to this problem? E.g. did you use the patch anyway option of VG1?

  7. 7 Loïc

I’m getting the same problem than Silence’s since I tried to patch Vista SP1 with VG1 - as I had already patched Vista before the SP1.

    Hey Duc Anh,

Thanks for the feedback. I’m pretty much convinced that beta3 will fix your problem, but I’ll attempt to replicate your situation as soon as I start testing anyway (just to be sure). Please expect a new version somewhere tomorrow.

That run… problem nearly killed my os!

When I went to logg on the message was there, it was always there, I wouldn’t have had a problem if hadn’t somehow disabled my keyboard. So therefore I couldn’t ’start using the cd rom’ etc.

I hope to see this fixed :D

    i am getting rundll problem…32bit

  18. 18 Dean

I read somewhere that to apply themes VistaGlazz was an easy way to do this. Since doing it on my SP1 machine I have had a rundll32 error anytime I try and personalize my “Windows Color and Appearance” or “Display Settings”. If the new version of VistaGlazz will fix this - I will wait until Saturday, if it wont fix already existing rundll32 errors caused by VistaGlazz then I need some good advice.

I also am not highly appreciating my Windows Classic look.

i have this problem after installing aero glazz to try and get my aero look back as i have vista and so i clicked patch anyway but it only made it worse, now every time i go on control panel it says:
    [_][#][X]
Windows host process (RunDLL) has stoppeed working

windows is checking for a solution to the problem…
    [cancel]

and it loads for a bit then says:

    [_][#][X]
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is
    avalible.
    [close program]

  23. 23 jim

    *vista glazz
    not aero glazz

  24. 24 jim

    I DID IT!!!!
I just fixed my aero. What I did is rename my:

    themeui.dll
    uxtheme.dll
    shsvcs.dll

I added .bak to mine, so that I know theyre my backups. So, themeui.dll –> themeui.dll.bak
But, of course, you can do yours however you think will be easiest for you to remember/find later.
    Then visit http://www.withinwindows.com/uxtheme-patches/
Id suggest reading the short intro, just so you feel comfortable knowing what youre doing with your PC
Then scroll down and find the version of vista youre using, this might be tricky because the patches are given by OSversions. Mine happened to be vista sp1 (im pretty sure thats what youll need; and not the AMD one!!), in case that matters to anyone. And umm I extracted the patch to my system32 folder and moved the originals (backup) to my documents in a seperate folder - just to be extra sure theyre easy to find later.

    ***fixed windows boot issue***

I patched vista sp1 64 bit with the vista glazz original and crashed it big time.

I brought it back to life by renaming:

    themeui.dll.vgorg
    uxtheme.dll.vgorg
    shsvcs.dll.vgorg

    to

    themeui.dll
    uxtheme.dll
    shsvcs.dll

((you will have to rename or delete the original files without the vgorg extensions first))

and all is fixed (done within safe mode comand prompt version).

if you want to get your system up and running again without vista glazz try this. it should work no matter what your version of windows and glazz.(although untested)
the only reason it wont work is if you dont have the vgorg (backup) versions but then just look to see if there is another version of the files may be a slightly different version but again maybe still usable.

    eg uxtheme.dll.bak etc

vgorg may stand for: vista glazz original
