FIRST, WHAT VISTAGLAZZ DOES:
How to install

1. Login as a user with Administrative privileges -or- have Administrative credentials ready (check under the keyboard for a slip of paper).
2. Navigate to %systemroot%\System32
3. Right-click uxtheme.dll and click properties.
4. Take ownership of the file and close dialogs.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for themeui.dll and shsvcs.dll
6. Right-click uxtheme.dll and click properties.
7. Give yourself (or group) Full Control permissions and close dialogs.
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for themeui.dll and shsvcs.dll.
9. Rename uxtheme.dll to uxtheme.old.
10. Rename themeui.dll to themeui.old.
11. Rename shsvcs.dll to shsvcs.old.
12. Copy patched files into %systemroot%\System32
13. Reboot (yes, this is really required)

Step 1b: If you find the above too intimidating, download VistaGlazz and just run it, it automates the whole patching process so you don’t have to worry about it! It is basically like Neowin uxtheme patcher we used to have for Windows XP.


NEXT, WHAT YOU NEED TO DO - VISTA GLAZZ HAS NO INSTRUCTIONS, AND THEY DON'T SEEM TO LIKE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS

Step 2: Download a Windows Vista Visual Style from our free Windows Vista Themes gallery, and copy the theme to Windows/Resources/Themes folder.

Step 3: Right click on desktop and click on Personalize. From the page that pops up, click on Theme and choose your newly installed theme!

AGH I THINK THOSE ARE ONLY FOR THE X64, AND EVEN THOUGH I HAVE AN AMDTURION64X2 PROCESSOR, I STILL HAVE A 32 BIT SYSTEM. SO I NEED THE 32 BIT VERSION.. MORE UPDATESS...

Help! I can't take ownership of the files. Instead of the writing being black, it is grey so that means that I can't change the permissions.

Please help, thanks.

PS: also, when I installed the updates for vista, it totally SCREWED how it looked like. It made it look like the classic windows. And when I tried to change the theme to a full transparent one, it wouldn't let me!! Any ideas? I need to install those updates, because LiveOne care keeps on bugging me.

In a nutshell, VistaGlazz takes ownership of the shsvcs, themeui and uxtheme files, creates a backup of those files and then patches them (it does not contain the patched files, it modifies the original ones).

Thank you for supplying the info on how to correctly install and select themes after patching. Since Yvo and I both have fulltime jobs, we can not spend as much time on VistaGlazz as we'd like. I'm sorry to hear that you feel we do not like to answer questions, matter of fact is that there is so much to do in a week, and so little time to do it.

The upcoming installer will come with a short manual, explaining what VistaGlazz does, what you need to do if you run into trouble and how other themes are to be installed and used.
